Forwarders are the intermediaries between shippers and the carriers who move the goods, and VenSoc built FreightW — an ERP for exactly that business — launched it commercially in July 2016 and still operates it for six forwarding companies. Why do freight forwarders outgrow generic systems?
Freight forwarders outgrow generic systems because the job is the unit of the business and generic software does not model it. One shipment gathers costs from carriers, agents, customs and handling in several currencies, and only becomes a margin once every one of those costs is in.
A general accounting package records the transactions but cannot say whether job 4471 made money, because it has no idea of a job. A general ERP can model a project but not an air waybill, an arrival notice or a customs entry. So forwarders run an operations spreadsheet next to the accounts, reconcile by hand, and find margin problems a month late.

- A freight-forwarding ERP built on Laravel and operated by VenSoc as a hosted service: CRM, quotations, job cards, air waybills, multi-currency invoicing and full double-entry accounting in one system. Built in 2015, commercially launched in July 2016, used by six forwarding companies today.

- A same-day, next-day and international courier and warehousing business in Devon, operating since 1990. VenSoc took over ongoing support of its website in 2025 — bug fixes, performance and uptime monitoring, security updates and dependency management — an inherited site, stated as such.

- Can you integrate our forwarding system with a customer or carrier system?
- Yes, and this is most of the work in practice. VenSoc builds the integration as a queue-mediated service with idempotent writes and a replayable log, rather than a direct point-to-point call. The difference matters at 3am: a point-to-point integration silently loses consignments when the other side is briefly unavailable, whereas a queued one turns the same outage into a delay you can see and replay.
- Where does AI actually help a freight forwarder?
- The realistic wins are document-heavy and exception-heavy processes, not autonomous routing. Extracting structured data from consignment notes, invoices and customs paperwork; triaging exceptions so a human sees the twenty that matter rather than the two thousand that do not; and drafting customer communications from operational state. These are measurable, bounded, and they survive a security review.
